Count Ferdinand Adolf August von Zeppelin (GER) made the first flight in a practical rigid airship on 2 July 1900, lasting for about 18 minutes. The Zeppelin LZ 1 hydrogen balloon is estimated to have reached around 400 metres above Lake Constance in Germany during the demonstration. Zeppelin was accompanied by a four-man crew: Von Bassus, E Wolff, Eisele and Gross. The balloon had a volume of 11,300 cubic metres. The LZ 1 would go on to inspire several iterations of Zeppelin balloons that would be used in everything from bombing missions to luxury air travel.
