Dr John F. Boynton and his fiancée Mary West Jenkins (both USA) were the first couple to take a trip in a balloon after exchanging their wedding vows, travelling some 20 kilometres from Manhattan to Mount Vernon, New York, USA, on 8 November 1865. Piloted by Thaddeus Sobieski Constantine Lowe (USA), the pair had wanted to get married in the balloon, but the priest (Reverend H W Beecher) refused to perform the ceremony while aloft. The aerostat gas balloon in which they travelled was called "United States".
