The first WtE plant was built in Nottingham, UK, in 1874. Designed by Stephen Fryer, these incinerators were originally known as “destructors”. Items were fed into a furnace to be destroyed, and while some destructors produced electricity as a by-product of burning, the process was not efficient owing to the level of pollution caused.
