On 20 October 2010, Turkish mathematician Selçuk Soner Akgül solved 10 sets of linear simultaneous equations (each set consisting of three equations in three unknown variables) – completing the task in 10 minutes 21.77 seconds, the fastest anyone has ever managed. He completed this incredible feat at the 9th Mathematics Symposium at Karadeniz Technical University, Turkey.
A set of simultaneous equations is a group of mathematical formulae, equal in number to the number of unknown variables that they contain. So, for example, 2x + y = 4 and y – x =1 form a valid set of simultaneous equations, because there are two equations and two unknown variables, x and y. In this case, the equations have the unique solution x = 1, y = 2. The simultaneous equations solved by Selçuk Soner Akgül for his world record attempt were more complex than this – each set involving three equations in three unknown variables.
