Largest family of freshwater dolphins

The largest taxonomic family of freshwater dolphins is Iniidae, which contains three species, all native to South America. These are: the Amazonian river dolphin or boto Inia geoffrensis, the Araguaian river dolphin or Araguaian boto I. araguaiaensis, and the Bolivian river dolphin I. boliviensis. This means that Inia is the largest genus of freshwater dolphins, because the other three exclusively freshwater genera – Lipotes, Platanista, and Pontoporia – each house just a single species. In addition, the genus Sotalia houses two dolphin species, but only one of these is a freshwater species.
The newest member of this family is the Araguaian river dolphin, which was formally classified and named as a separate species from the Amazonian river dolphin as recently as January 2014.
