The dolphin with the greatest number of teeth is the long-beaked common dolphin Delphinus capensis, which has a very disparate distribution in tropical and warmer temperate oceans worldwide. It possesses 47–67 pairs of small conical teeth in each jaw, which are used for grasping prey. Until 1994, the long-beaked common dolphin was considered conspecific with the short-beaked common dolphin D. delphis, but taxonomic studies confirmed its separate taxonomic status. Moreover, it has since been split into two subspecies, one of which, the tropical long-beaked common dolphin D. c. tropicalis, is considered by some researchers to be itself worthy of reclassification as a separate species in its own right.
