The Rothschild Prayerbook (c.1505), an illuminated manuscript on Vellum measuring 22.8 x 16 cm (9 x 6 in) sold for £8,580,000 ($13,400,000) after an estimate of £2,000,000 - 3,000,000 ($3,100,000 - 4,700,000) at Christie's, London, UK on 8 July 1999.
The manuscript was the top lot of the sale of works of art from the collection of the Barons Nathaniel and Albert von Rothschild, which in itself set a record for the highest grossing single-owner European sale at £57,716,497 ($89,916,528).
For the four-hour-long sale, 380 seats had been pre-booked and 70 phones were in use.
The entire sale made nearly three times its high pre-sale estimate, with 14 lots selling for over £1 million ($1,557,900).
