Up to 1 m (3 ft 3 in) long and 40 kg (88 lb) in weight, the world’s largest species of herbivorous burrowing mammal is the northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii) of Queensland, Australia. One of the world’s rarest mammals, it is classed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, and is entirely restricted to a single 3-km2 (1.1-m2) area within Queensland’s Epping Forest National Park. The total population is currently estimated at approximately 90 individuals.
