The longest worker ants (which are always female) are those of the giant bulldog ant Myrmecia brevinoda, which is a species of Australian bull ant restricted to the eastern Australian states. Specimens up to 37 mm long have been recorded. Apart from the bulbous portion of their abdomen, which is black, these large ants are made even more eyecatching by their deep crimson colouration. The queens of this species can exceed 40 mm long, thereby making the giant bulldog ant one of the world's largest species of bull ant.
