The world’s largest living turtle, the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) also holds the record for the longest migration of any reptile. Between 2006 and early 2008, a tagged leatherback was tracked by satellite as it made a 20,558-kilometre (12,774-mile) journey from its nesting site on Jamursba-Medi Beach in Papua, Indonesia, to feeding grounds off the coast of the US state of Oregon. The journey, to the other side of the planet, took the intrepid turtle 647 days to complete.
