Most species of bat only give birth to a single young (pup) per litter. However, several species of the genus Lasiurus, including the eastern red bat (L. borealis) of North America, the hoary bat (L. cinereus) and the northern yellow bat (L. intermedius) produce litters of up to four, or even five, pups per litter, and have four nipples rather than the usual two.
Although most bats only give birth to a single pup per litter, some species – especially various species living in the tropics – produce more than one litter per year.
