When 36-year-old architect and designer Markus Voglreiter and wife Ursula bought an existing 1970s house near Salzburg, Austria, Markus decided to extend his new home with a new 14-m-long (45-ft 11.18-in) and 10-m-high (32-ft 9.7-in) wing shaped like a VW Beetle car. The three-storey, 83.61-m² (900-ft²) “Auto Residence” cost over US$1 million to construct, and boasts four over-sized timber “wheels”, which act as privacy screens, a pine roof with glass “windscreen”, two round bedroom windows as “headlights”, and another round window as the “fuel cap”. The Voglreiters can also use their bright yellow home’s “exhaust” for barbecues. Taken together, the Auto Residence extension and the existing house offer three separate residences for different generations of the Voglreiter family. Even before the house was finished, it was already attracting coach-loads of curious tourists. Not content with his VW house, in 2007 Voglreiter competed the larger "Das Auto" restaurant in Salzburg, also shaped like a VW Beetle.
