In 1248, Chinese author Sung T'zu wrote a 55-volume book entitled His Duan Yu (The Washing Away of Wrongs). This treatise on the medical causes of death also included descriptions of how to distinguish drowning from strangulation. This is the first recorded application of medicine to help solve a crime. Sung T'zu’s methodology included investigating the damage to throat cartilage to solve murder cases involving strangulation.
