The largest surviving ancient Roman aqueduct is the Pont du Gard near Nimes in southern France, which stands 47 m (155 ft) tall and is 275 m (902 ft) long at its highest level. It was built in the late 1st century BC or the early 1st century AD and carried water across the river Gard.
