The largest free-standing cross measures 152.4 m (500 ft) tall and is made out of stone. It stands above an underground church and tomb, in the Valley of the Fallen, Madrid, Spain. The cross can be seen from 48.2 km (30 miles) away. It was designed by Juan de Avalos (Spain) and built as a memorial to all those who died in the Spanish Civil War.
