Fastest animal tongue
Who
Giant Palm Salamander (Bolitoglossa dofleini)
When
15 February 2007
The fastest tongue in the animal kingdom belongs to the giant palm salamander (Bolitoglossa dofleini), native to Central America. This amphibian species can extend its tongue fully in approximately 7 milliseconds, which is 50 times faster than a single blink of an eye, and makes it the fastest moving muscle of any kind in any animal. The findings were published by researchers of the University of South Florida in The Journal of Experimental Biology on 15 February 2007. The giant palm salamander’s tongue boasts another record: at 18,000 watt of power per kilogram of tongue muscle, nearly twice as strong as the previous record holder, the Colorado river toad Bufo alvarius, it is world's strongest animal muscle.
