The principle of a lightning rod or lightning conductor is that a metal rod attached to the top of a building, which then continues underground, will provide a preferential pathway for a lightning strike which, otherwise, would have struck the building itself. Lightning tends to strike the tallest object in the area, so lightning rods need to be taller than any nearby structures in order to be effective. The first lightning rod was invented by Benjamin Franklin (USA) in 1749.
