The first commercially available mobile phone (cellphone) was the DynaTAC 8000X, which went on sale on 6 March 1983. Made by Motorola, the 8000X weighed in at a hefty 785 g (28 oz) and measured 300 x 44 x 89 mm (13 x 1.75 x 3.5 in), hence why its creators affectionately nicknamed it “The Brick”. It was the developed version of a Motorola prototype used in 1973.
