Candy Crush Saga (King, 2012) and Clash of Clans (Supercell, 2012) may be more familiar to Western gamers but neither can lay claim to being the first mobile game to generate $1 billion in sales. That honour goes to Puzzle & Dragons (GungHo Online Entertainment, 2012) after Japanese developer GungHo unveiled that 91% of the $1.5 billion revenues made in 2013 was thanks to its mobile title, which earned $650 million through Apple’s App Store and $775 million through Google Play. Zynga's popular Facebook game FarmVille reached the landmark $1 billion figure first, as revealed by its then-CEO Mark Pincus in February 2013, but GungHo's title is the first mobile app to officially hit the $1 billion barrier.
