The most popular cross-platform console videogame beta for a new IP is 9.7 million players, and was achieved by Overwatch (Blizzard, 2016) on 12 May 2016.
On 12 May 2016, Blizzard announced that 9.7 million players had participated in the public beta test for its multiplayer FPS Overwatch (2016) – the most recorded for a new multi-platform franchise. This was more than the 6.4 million who played Ubisoft's TPS The Division just under three months earlier. Overwatch is a near-futuristic squad shooter in which heroes are called upon to protect Earth from rogue robots, terrorists and corrupt corporations.
The beta ran on 4–10 May 2016.
The game is Blizzard's first FPS.
