Designed by Gerald “Jerry” Lawson, the Fairchild VES – better known as the Channel F – was the first console to introduce slot-in game cartridges, enabling manufacturers to extend the consumer value of their hardware with extra games. Cartridges remained the standard format for console videogames for the next 20 years.

Previous consoles had the games as integral components – even the Magnavox Odyssey, which offered different games on different circuit boards.
