The first direct sequel to Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo, 1985) was not even released on a Nintendo console. Super Mario Bros. Special (Hudson Soft, 1986) was the first Nintendo-licensed follow-up to the NES smash hit and was released on the NEC-PC8801 and Sharp X1 series of Japanese PCs, a few months before Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels and a couple of years before Super Mario Bros. 2. This was the third of three Hudson Soft Mario-related releases for Japanese PCs: Punchball Mario Bros was released on 26 August 1984 followed by Mario Bros. Special in December 1984.
