Set for late 2014 release, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (Big Red Button, 2014) will be the first Wii U title to use the sophisticated CryEngine that was behind titles such as Far Cry (Crytek, 2004), Ryse: Son of Rome (Crytek Frankfurt, 2013), Crysis 3 (Crytek UK/Crytek Frankfurt, 2013) and Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 (City Interactive, 2013). The game engine, created by Crytek, is renowned for its rendering of lush tropical landscapes and had to be adapted to accommodate Sonic Boom’s split-screen gameplay. Sonic Boom is not a re-boot but "a new branch of the Sonic universe", complete with new-look character design for Sonic and chums and accompanied by a TV series and range of toys and merchandise.
