Initially a series-exclusive for Sega platforms, Sonic videogames have gone on to receive a wide release across all major consoles and platforms – including one-time rival, Nintendo. Sonic Adventure 2 (Sonic Team, 2001) was the last title of the series published for the Sega platform when it was released for the Dreamcast in June 2001. It was ported to the Nintendo Gamecube and re-titled as Sonic Adventure 2 Battle in December 2001 in Japan, February 2002 in North America, and May 2002 in Europe, and sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide. It later received a high-definition release on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in October 2012, with a version for Microsoft Windows via Steam released in November 2012. Sonic Advance (Dimps Corporation/Sonic Team, 2001) was the first original Sonic title released for a Nintendo console. It was released in late 2001 in Japan and early 2002 elsewhere and ported to Nokia’s N-Gage in October 2003 as SonicN with a version for Android devices released in Japan in November 2011.
The Sonic Boom releases on the Wii U and 3DS represents the last of a three-game exclusivity deal with Nintendo announced in May 2013.
