Half-Life 2 (Valve, 2004) holds the distinction of being the first videogame to offer full closed captioning. This means that players with a hearing impairment can enjoy the game with visible audio cues. As a case and point, the words "[Boom!]" will flash up on the screen whenever a grenade explodes. It’s not scripted, but entirely dynamic to the gameplay. Zork: Grand Inquisitor (Activision, 1997) was the first videogame to feature any kind of captions, but Half-Life 2 was the first videogame with full closed captioning in the sense that every sound effect - whether scripted or dynamic - was visually communicated. In comparison, Zork: Grand Inquistor only closed captioned "some of the sound effects".
