Early stealth games required the player to see their avatar on screen, often from a third-person perspective, so players could easily see when they were entering into the line of sight of guards and so on. Thief: The Dark Project (Looking Glass Studios, 1998) brought the significant innovation of first-person perspective into the stealth genre, with greater emphasis on sound and the use of shadows.
From Metal Gear Solid onwards, the Metal Gear series has used a third-person perspective.
