- Brazil (Sao Paulo,)
- When
- 12 June 2014
The first use of vanishing spray in a FIFA World Cup took place during the 2014 edition of the tournament held in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July. The spray was used by referee Yuichi Nishimura (Japan) in the opening game, Brazil vs Croatia in the Arena de Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil on 12 June 2014.
The vanishing spray has been used in CONMEBOL tournaments for several years but it was first trialled in a FIFA tournament in 2013 during the U20s World Cup. The spray is used to mark the ball position and line in which defending players must stand (10 yards/9.1 metres away from the ball). The spray disappears within minutes.
