First report of a flying saucer

- Who
- Kenneth Arnold
- Where
- United States (Mount Rainier,)
- When
- 24 June 1947
UFOs have been recorded for hundreds of years in various forms, but it was the sighting by pilot Kenneth Arnold on 24 June 1947 that led newspapers to coin the term “flying saucer”.
Arnold himself didn’t use the exact phrase to describe the nine objects he saw in the sky near Mount Rainier in Washington, USA, although he did say they were like saucers, discs or pie-plates. The famous description was used in the media.
