Papers published by G J Boekenoogen (Netherlands) trace the legend of girls born with the face of a pig back to the 1630s. A Dutch print goes farther back, recounting the story of a girl from 1621 who grew up to eat from a trough and talk in grunts. Such fanciful accounts were spread in pamphlets and ballads that were in general circulation during the 17th and 18th centuries.
