System Shock 2 (Irrational Games/Looking Glass Studios, 1999), is the first game to use audio logs as its main narrative device. These logs were hidden throughout the game and contained important clues as to the Von Braun spaceship's hellish past. Audio and video snippets have been used sparingly in early games; however, System Shock 2 was the first to both popularize and make full use of the storytelling mechanic.
