When
1943
The longest material-transport cable car ever built is approximately 96 km (60 miles) long and was first opened in 1943 to transport ore from Kristenberg to Boliden in Sweden. The cable car was constructed in lieu of a road, owing to the shortage of rubber and gasoline during WWII. The system was decommissioned for ore transport in 1987, and has since been transformed into a 13.2-km (8.2-mile) tourist ride.
