The largest fleet of electric taxis is found in the city of Shenzen, China. As of 1 January 2019, a reported 99 percent of the city's 21,689 licensed taxis (approximately 21,500 vehicles) are plug-in electric cars. The taxis are operated by the Pengcheng Electric Taxi Company, a joint venture between the city's bus operator and the Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD.

Shenzen (a city of 12.5 million people near the border with Hong Kong) is the home of China's tech industry, with companies such as telecommunications giant Huawei based there. The city administration started work on the electric car project in May 2010, building thousands of charging stations for buses and taxis around the city.
