- When
- 18 September 1977
On 18 September 1977, NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft – while en route to Jupiter – turned its camera back towards Earth and captured the Earth and Moon in a single frame, from a distance of 11.66 million km. The image, P-19891, 79-HC-3, shows Earth and Moon as crescents but, as Earth is so much brighter, the Moon has been artificially enhanced by a factor of three in order for it to be visible.
