The first open-water swimmer to win a FINA World Championships gold medal in every discipline was Viola Valli (Italy), who won the 5 km and 25 km events in 2001 before adding the 10 km title to her collection in 2003. Valli's feat was matched by Larissa Ilchenko in 2006 and they remain the only two women to have won all three distances. In the men´s event, this was achieved in 2013 by Thomas Lurz.
