The most Winter Olympic appearances by an athlete is 8 and was achieved by ski-jumper Noriaki Kasai (Japan), consecutively from 1992 to 2018; and equalled by speed skater Claudia Pechstein (Germany) in 1992, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2014, 2018 and 2022.
Pechstein became the oldest woman to compete at the Winter Olympics when she participated in qualification for the 3,000 m speed skating at the age of 49, finishing 20th out of 20 competitors. She missed the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver owing to a two-year ban imposed by the International Skating Union for abnormal blood levels, which they said indicated doping.
