The first ship to be sunk by a self-propelled torpedo was the Turkish ship Intibah, which was sunk by Whitehead torpedoes in January 1878 after they were launched from Russian torpedo boats during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78.
This was also the first use of a subsurface self-propelled torpedo in combat.
