According to Flight Global’s World Air Forces 2014, the US F-16 Fighting Falcon, manufactured by the US General Dynamics/Lockheed Martin, is the most common active combat aircraft, with 2,281 aircraft representing 15% of the world's combat aircraft. It first flew on 20 January 1974. The unit cost in the financial year 1998 (FY 98) was US$26.9 million.
