In 2013 the company Solid Concepts, based in Austin, Texas, USA, produced the world’s first metal 3D-printed gun, using powdered metals and a laser-sintering process that makes the powder coalesce into a solid mass. The gun is a replica of the 1911 Browning Pistol and has fired 50 rounds successfully. The purpose of the project was to demonstrate that 3D metal printing provides strong, reliable and accurate products for every day use.
