In total, 11 players have scored hat-tricks at the Confederations Cup but no player had managed to do so on more than one occasion until Fernando Torres bagged four goals against Tahiti in Spain's 10–0 rout. He had previously scored a hat-trick in the 2009 tournament also against OFC opposition, on that occasion New Zealand were the victims.
