On 17 February 1864, during the American Civil War, the Confederate vessel, the H.L. Hunley became the first combat submarine to sink an enemy warship, the USS Housatonic off Charleston, South Carolina, USA. However, it sank with its crew a few minutes after the engagement. It was recovered in 2000 and, after 11 years of conservation and restoration work, was displayed in January 2013. The boat was 12 m (40 ft) in length and named after the man who developed and paid for it.
