In the BBC's 2009 TV series Toy Stories, presenter James May (UK) took part in the construction of a model aircraft from a fully scaled-up Airfix kit, resulting in a 1:1 replica of a Spitfire Supermarine Mk1 with a wingspan of 11.2 m (36 ft 10 in) and a length of 9.12 m (29 ft 11 in). The model was built and painted over three days in Hangar 1 at the Royal Air Force Museum in RAF Cosford in Shropshire, UK, with the help of students from Thomas Telford School.
The scaled-up Airfix model kit included a 1:1 model of James May dressed as a World War II fighter pilot. The fragile model was dismantled in 2010 but then rebuilt, with additional metal supports to strengthen it, and returned to the original hangar in which it was built. The original Airfix model kit is a 1:72 scale Spitfire.
