The oldest player to make a Champions League debut is Mark Schwarzer (Australia, b. 6 October 1972), who was aged 41 years 66 days when he played for Chelsea versus Steaua Bucharest at Stamford Bridge in London, UK, on 11 December 2013. Schwarzer was also the second-oldest player to participate in the Champions League behind another goalkeeper, Marco Ballota, who was 43 years 252 days when he played for Lazio versus Real Madrid. Coincidentally, Ballota's record took place on 11 December 2007 – exactly six years before Schwarzer's appearance.
