As of January 2014, the oldest railway workshop in continuous operation is the Boston Lodge Works of the Festiniog Railway near Minffordd in Wales. Maintenance of wagons commenced there with a blacksmith's shop in 1838, from which the current works complex has steadily expanded. Wagon maintenance was being undertaken in 1836 and 1837 on the site and in December 1838 there is reference to a blacksmith's shop or "smithy" (still in use as the current brass foundry building) being built, and sheds for wagon storage in 1842/43. The building of the first manufactory was authorized in 1847 and opened in 1848 to include the foundry, blacksmith's workshop, sawmill, carpenter's shop, engine house and machine shop. The site is still in daily use for the manufacture and overhaul of locomotives, carriages and wagons for the Festiniog Railway and private contracts.
