Highest chart placing by a crowdfunded music release

Theatre is Evil, an album by Amanda Palmer & the Grand Theft Orchestra, achieved a top 10 placing on the Billboard 200 on its release in September 2012 – the highest position achieved by a crowdfunded music release. Palmer (USA) raised the money to record the album via a Kickstarter appeal launched on 20 April 2012. The album, which stayed at No.10 for two weeks on the Billboard 200, also reached No.3 on Billboard's Alternative chart, No.2 on their Independent chart, No.7 on their Digital chart, and No.8 on their Rock chart. The album sold 24,000 copies in its first week of release, with 93% of sales made via downloads or internet retailers.
