Kickstarter is the largest crowdsourcing (or crowdfunding) platform. As of 5 August 2015, more than 9.1 million people had pledged $1,871,520,731 (£1,200,530,870), successfully funding at least 90,154 projects. Co-founded by Perry Chen, Yancey Strickler and Charles Adler (all USA), and based in New York, USA, Kickstarter launched on 28 April 2009. Kickstarter provides a funding platform for creative endeavours and is based on the subscription model of arts patronage, helping to finance films, computer games, music (from albums to tours) as well as art, design and technology projects.

Not all Kickstarter projects find success, however. As of the same date, 14% of projects hadn't received a single pledge.
