Announced as a Kickstarter campaign on 15 June 2015, Shenmue 3 – the long-awaited sequel to the cult open-world RPGs – raised $1 million in just 1 hour 44 minutes, smashing the previous record of 5 hours 55 minutes set by Yooka-Laylee. Shenmue 3's announcement was one of the biggest surprises of the Sony press conference at E3 2015. "We can unfold the continuous story," said Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki. "Shenmue 3 will be the story you have waited for. The fate of Shenmue is in your hands now." The game's initial target of $2 million was exceeded in 8 hours 43 minutes, leaving almost 31 days to raise even more money for the game's development. Reports in other media originally reported that Shenmue 3 took 1 hour 42 minutes to reach $1million. However this did not take into account pledges that were either cancelled or changed.

Shenmue 3 was being developed for PS4 and PC, with an initial tentative release date of December 2017.
