The most crowdfunded videogame is Star Citizen (Cloud Imperium Games), which has raised $551,095,618 as of 22 February 2023 from 4,419,232 backers. The controversial sci-fi space trading and combat simulation, which crossed the half a billion dollars raised mark in September 2022, is still without a release date over a decade after its crowdfunding effort began in September 2012. But it is played by an army of loyal fans who collectively spend millions of dollars on virtual space ships each month. Star Citizen's crowdfunding total towers over that of its closest competitors, Richard Garriott’s infamous RPG Shroud of the Avatar ($12,865,148) and Shenmue 3 ($7,179,510).
