"Zero-gravity" footage for the film Gravity (USA, 2013) was filmed within a custom-built light box containing 1,800,000 high-powered LEDs, individually controlled by the film’s effects team to help recreate the natural light and shade of real outer-space photography. The light box took the form of a hollow cube, 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide, within which actors were suspended in costume. The interior walls were constructed of 196 panels, each measuring approximately 2 feet by 2 feet and each holding 4,096 tiny LED lights. Approximately 60% of the finished film was shot inside the light box.
