The first person to play at the highest level in the three codes of Australian Rules Football, Rugby League and Rugby Union is Karmichael Hunt (Australia), who began his career in the NRL with Brisbane Broncos in 2004 before switching to Rubgy Union with Biarritiz for the 2009–10 season. In 2011 he played his first competitive AFL game for the Gold Coast Suns.
Since the late 19th century there have been numerous players crossing the two rugby codes from union to league and more recently vice-versa. In Australia it is not unheard of that players play all three codes at some point during their schoolboy career, yet there had never been an occasion on which a player went to the AFL having played both rugby codes at the highest level.
More recently Israel Folau became only the second person to play in all three codes: he had played one season in the AFL with Greater Western Sydney in 2012 after a successful Rugby League career before announcing in 2013 that he would play Rugby Union. Incredibly in his first full season he equalled the all-time Australian records for most tries at international level by scoring 10 times.
