Sandy Allan, Rick Allen
Where
Pakistan
When
15 July 2012
Nanga Parbat in Pakistan was first successfully climbed in 1953 by Hermann Buhl (Austria). However, it was not until 6:12 p.m. on 15 July 2012 that it was ascended via the Mazeno Ridge by Sandy Allan and Rick Allen (both UK). The technically difficult Mazeno Ridge or west-southwest route is the longest ridge on any 8,000-m peak. The two climbers, along with Cathy O'Dowd (South Africa) and Sherpas Lhakpa Nuru, Lhakpa Rangduk and Lhakpa Zarok (all Nepal) began the climb on 2 July, but O'Dowd and the three Sherpas abandoned the attempt after 12 days on the mountain.
At an elevation of (8,125 m; 26,656 ft) Nanga Parbat is the ninth tallest mountain in the world. The first successful climb, by Hermann Buhl (Austria), took place on 3 July 1953.
